Asa C. Morse, Supervisory Special Agent

    US Drug Enforcement Administration

The Opioid Epidemic – From China to the South Shore

US Drug Enforcement Administration - Resident Agent in Charge Asa Morse will discuss the history of the opioid epidemic, its ties to international poly-drug distribution organizations and it’s local impact. Asa will discuss the explosion of opioid use and abuse across the country, and provide an overview of an investigation into the overdose death of young woman on the south shore. The investigation began with a distraught grieving mother walking into the Cape Cod Office of the DEA and ended with the arrest, prosecution and sentencing of 6 defendants being charged with the teen’s death. Asa has spent 20 years in law enforcement including time spent working undercover, investigating and raiding methamphetamine labs, working inner city gangs and most recently oversaw the Task Force responsible for seizing over 71 Kilograms of Fentanyl in a 6 week period in October 2018. As part of that investigation, 5 kilograms of fentanyl were seized, and reported by Time Magazine as enough fentanyl to “kill half the State of Massachusetts”.

In this presentation we will discuss:

    • The anatomy of a cyber-attack
    • Methods for protecting companies from a cyber-attack

BAYSTATE FINANCIAL PLANNING is a separate Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) that is not affiliated with nor is it a subsidiary of: Baystate Financial Services, Baystate Wealth Management, MassMutual or MML Investor Services

    Our topic will be:

Retirement Planning under the Current Tax Law

    • Contributions -- The goal for traditional retirement planning contributions is to take a deduction now on contributions and then take distributions when you are in a lower income tax bracket. Does it make sense for business owners to make tax deductible contributions when they are currently in a 21% tax bracket for C-Corporations or 29.6% top tax bracket for pass through businesses after the 20% Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction? However, does it make sense for the owners of “specified service” pass through businesses to make tax deductible contributions to stay under the QBI limits?
    • Distributions -- Traditional retirement accounts work best if the participants take distributions in lower income tax brackets than they were in when funds were contributed, and when investment markets are up. How should you prepare for the years of retirement when you are in a higher income tax bracket than you were in when tax deductible contributions were made? How should you prepare for the years of retirement when investment markets are down?

NPEPC is excited to announce to Members...

    NPEPC Lunch Round Table Discussion

Our Moderator will be:  Christine Fletcher

As a partner in and co-chair of the firm’s Private Client group, Christine helps families plan for life’s transitions whether it is moving assets to the next generation, minimizing estate taxes or ensuring assets pass to intended recipients. Estate planning solutions can be simple, but like life, they can also be complicated. Issues arise with second marriages, divorce, blended families and unfortunate family crises. Christine listens to clients’ goals and develops plans for them that meet those goals.

    Our topic will be:

Ten Things to Know in Talking to Your Kids About Prenups

Christine will discuss how to properly advise the family when members of the second or third generation decide to marry. Often, advice in protecting the family’s assets is at odds with the young couple’s pleas of how in love they are. She will discuss the 10 topics that should be raised in discussing prenuptial agreements with clients.
